Tom Hodge on expanding his career from music to marketing

After a decade making his mark on the Brisbane music scene, Tom Hodge wanted to gain a better understanding of the marketing industry.

“Studying marketing seemed a natural progression from the experience I’d gained in the music industry,” Tom said.

Now enrolled in a Bachelor of Business (Marketing) at Martin Higher Education, Tom quickly realised how much marketing influences everyday life.

“It can be applied to many different situations. I love being able to put into practice what I’m learning in my degree. I run my own business, Lè Froth, with a friend. I now pay much more attention to the Lè Froth brand and what it represents, especially on social media.”

After selling tickets, promoting club nights and festivals and DJ’ing, Tom and his friend started Lè Froth a few years ago to organise techno and house events in Brisbane.

“The highlight of running Lè Froth was doing our first international artist, Funk D’Void, on New Year’s Day 2015 at Capulet,” Tom said.

“We took a bit of a risk, but it worked out very well in the end.”

There is no risk in Tom’s choice of study and he has already seen its positive impact on his business.

“The main difference I have seen in the running of my events has been my confidence. The best example of this is when I partnered with the clothing label ZANEROBE to coordinate an event for the launch of their Spring/Summer collection for the General Pants Co. team.”

“Martin Higher Education offers me more classes on campus than other colleges. The smaller class size also mean the lecturers and my fellow students can easily pass on real world experience and knowledge,” Tom said.

“My biggest challenge has been adapting my lifestyle to accommodate full-time study, but it’s worth it. Celebrating after receiving the final results for the trimester is definitely fun.”

As part of his degree, Tom will complete a Professional Industry Engagement subject.

“Industry placement will help me decide which aspect of marketing I prefer,” he said.

Tom hopes to find a placement in an agency that covers areas including branding, digital and strategic marketing.

“This will give me exposure to a range of different clients and projects. It will also help me define my future career direction.”
